The Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981
As per The Health and Safety (First-Aid) regulations 1981, employers are required to provide adequate and appropriate equipment, facilities and personnel to enable first aid to be given to employees if they are injured or become ill at work. These Regulations apply to all workplaces including those with five or fewer employees and to the self-employed.
What is adequate will depend on the circumstances in the workplace. This includes whether trained first aiders are needed, what should be included in a first aid box and if a first aid room is needed. Employers should carry out an assessment of first aid needs to determine this. To carry out this assessment, employers are required to consider the hazards and risks of the workplace, the size of the organisation and other relevant factors. This information will determine what first aid eqiupment, facilities and personnel should be provided. As from the 1st October the Training Needs Analysis changes. The main difference effecting majority of companies is the requirement of an Emergency First Aider instead of the Appointed Person. The difference between these two courses is that EFAW is accredited by the HSE and therefore the delegate will be called a First Aider. The First At Work has also changed to a three day course instead of a four day course. Both these certificates are valid for three years however the HSE does strongly recommend that all First Aiders (FAW and EFAW) have yearly refreshers. These refreshers only take approx 3 hours so therefore should not be too invasive to the working day.
